Bunkerexhibition #45 – Hannah kommt zurück Floris Meijer
The first exhibition organized by Ronin van Gastel. I was amused and touched by the fact Ronin really liked Floris’ work, and related to it, the way he did.
Floris Meijer, 03-01-2000 was a 4th year bachelor photography student at the Royal Academy of Art in 2022. He mainly works on documentary projects. Floris often examines the connection between man and place. The exhibition consists of three different series of photographs: Hannah Kommt Zurück -Hannah comes Back-, Shirin Yoku, and Samenspraak -Dialogue-. Bunkerexpositie #46 – Custom Ode/ The Shadow has two faces Joanna Toetenel
Joanna: I exhibited in three rooms in the bunker. I like to work -not always- with light and always with memories, events and performance. As a kind of personal awards.
I make ode’s in the form of objects and also compare them with tattoos, but for your house instead of for your skin. It’s something you often think about a little longer before you buy it and it relates to a certain period of time in your life so you can ‘carry’ it with you for the rest of your life, or until you’re fed up. Fortunately, these are a lot less painful to remove. (-:

Rayke: Joanna and me have known each other ‘forever’, she used to work for us when she was very, very young and helped me out through the years whenever we needed a helping hand. While she exhibited in the bunker, she guided the many visitors, art lovers, innocent bystanders and accidental tourists around to explain her work Custom Ode to the public. Which was a performance in itself

Joanna: Toen ik 17 was kwam ik bij toeval op een date terecht bij ‘de bootjes’, een roeibotenverhuur en theeschenkerij in het Westbroekpark, Den Haag.
Ik vond het daar zo leuk en zij mij gelukkig ook dat ik daar ging werken. (Ik was vroeger altijd heel verlegen en ben daarom op mijn 15e begonnen met werken in de horeca). Er werkten en kwamen daar allemaal verschillende type mensen van politici tot antroposofen. Helemaal te gek vond ik dat. Zoveel geleerd van al die mensen en zoveel toffe dingen mee mogen maken daar. Ze hebben daar ook altijd verschillende gast koks die verschillende stijlen koken en daar heb ik mijn liefde voor eten ontwikkeld. Iedere jaar kom ik nog terug om een keer te helpen met een feestje of gewoon een keer een diner te draaien. Die mensen zijn familie geworden.
Nu komt ie. Die wc was altijd een heel ding. De muren betegeld met witte tegels en speciale handgeschilderde tegels door de huiskunstenaar. Op die tegels stonden dan de namen van medewerkers en graag geziene gasten. Sinds mijn 17e wil ik super mega graag ook zo’n tegeltje. 21 jaar wil ik al zo’n tegeltje, 21 jaar. Nondejuuuuu. Het is een ding.
Nu stuurt de eigenaresse van de bootjes mij eergisteren een bericht dat ze een tegeltje voor mij heeft laten maken door Huibert de huis kunstenaar en of ik die vandaag in Amsterdam in ontvangst wil nemen of dat ze hem op zou sturen.
Dus nu had ik haar uitgenodigd om te komen lunchen en kreeg ik eindelijk mijn tegeltje èn mocht ik een keer voor haar koken.
Als een kind zo blij. Mijn eigen bootjestegel. Zo mooi.

Counter Currents
The second exhibition organized by Ronin van Gastel
Countercurrents is a group exhibition by students of the two-year master programme Photography & Society of the Royal Academy of Art The Hague in collaboration with Creative Court, a non-profit organisation that develops art projects reflecting on peace and global justice. Creative Court believes it is quite impossible to achieve world peace through rules and regulations. Because before reshaping the world, we first need to re-imagine it.
Sumi Anjuman (BD), Arianna Cavalensi (IT) , Beatrice Cera (IT), Daniel Chatard (GER), Pascal Giese (GER), He Bo (CN), Charmaine de Heij (NL)Lea Novi (GER), Diego Reindel (GER), Jonathan Tang (NL), Ben Yau (UK), Alexey Yurenev (RU/US).
The project “Countercurrents” showcases a collection of works by a dynamic group of image makers prompted by the dangerous effects that are connected to the presence of underwater munitions in our oceans. From this starting point each artist found their own topic. The featured artists challenge the status quo and (re)present alternatives on the negligence of the past, trauma, the hidden, the interconnections between us, others, as well as our planet.
As part of the programme, organised tours will guide visitors through the collective works in and around the bunker, which is the location of the offline exhibition. In this former part of the Atlantikwall, a series of talks and performances will be hosted and presented on our online exhibition (www.countercurrents.co) the next day.

Photography & Society is a two-year master programme offered at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK) since September 2018. The Master’s programme Photography & Society at the KABK educates socially-engaged photographers of the 21st century, who possess an active interest in the technological, political, environmental and social role of the photograph. As a collective, we research and foster encounters beyond the photographic medium with the aim of formulating new ways of how photography can be positioned and contextualised within society.
About the location
The exhibition will be held on the territory of Bunker V192, which was built as part of a line of defense by the Nazis during WW2 in 1943. This ‘machine bunker’ has a unique design, and the only one of its kind to be found in The Netherlands. Since 2002, the bunker has been used as an exhibition space. Bunker V192 is located on the site of Waterkant.
