2021 was another strange year, Bunkerexhibition and Covid 19 wise. Very eclectic. For example we never had work on paper because of the bunker’s humidity and emphasized on moving images mainly. But in 2021 the majority of the works were on paper, apparently people really wanted to exhibit in our bunker. I have to check but I think Bunkerexhibition #43 even payed us to use the space.

Bunkerexhibition #41 – A glimpse into the present Kamile Rimkute
A glimpse into the present is an interactive sound installation that enables visitors to generate sound real time with their brainwaves and states of relaxation. The installation uses BCI (brain-computer interface) technology with EEG (electroencephalogram) headset, which has 8 electrodes that pick up electrical currents from participants’ brains. 8 electrodes correspond to 8 speakers in the space.
When people become more relaxed, alpha rhythms appear in their brainwaves. The installation uses those alpha brainwaves to trigger (“play”) digital synthesizers written in SuperCollider, a programming language for audio synthesis and algorithmic composition. The longer participants stay in the relaxed state, the more changes in sound they are able to hear.
This installation does not require effort or practice nor does it read your thoughts. Rather, it offers a space for everyone to have their unique experiences. As this installation accommodates one person at a time, this can be seen as an alternative way for everybody to familiarise with meditation differently through sound.
The installation is based on neurofeedback methods, where subjects are expected to change their neural activity in response to real time visual or auditory displays of their brain activity. In this case, sound is a confirmation of alpha waves presence in the participant’s brain. a glimpse into the present is an experience, where participants can allow themselves to be present. As technology often challenges us to be in the present through distraction, this installation functions as an antithesis by using technology to meditate and as a result to be more present.

Bunkerexhibition #42 – They just slipped through Liselot Roben
In 2013, Liselot graduated from de kunstacademie Haarlem Leiden with a degree in autonomous visual
arts. Her paintings are large-scale – or at least as large as her studio in the attic of an
old building on Juffrouw Idastraat in The Hague allows.
Stories are important; they give meaning to life.
Liselot hoped that people will let their imaginations run freely when viewing her work. Besides being an artist and illustrator, Liselot works as a child psychologist in a private
practice in Capelle aan den IJssel, where she mainly helps children and young people struggling with
anxiety, trauma or depression. Here too, stories play a major role, offering strength and
healing where needed. In the past, Liselot has created work for the ‘Europa’ Summer Exhibition, based on Syrian refugees seeking to cross the European border.
Liselot: ‘When people talk about migrants, refugees or foreigners, they forget that we are talking about fathers and mothers holding their children’s hands in search of safety. In my work Welcome Stranger, I try to narrow the focus and show the viewer the parent and the child. This work is currently on display at the headquarters of the Dutch Council for Refugees. Also on display in the bunker: They just slipped through. Based on Dutch footage from 1939 and images from Eritrea and the Moria camp in Greece in 2015. Without colour or detail, you can’t tell the difference. They’re just people.
Bunkerexhibition #43 – Gallery de Thorigny presents Valentin Ammann, Tokio Okada, Bas Harpe, Shono Inoue & Emily Louise
“Gallery de Thorigny is situated in one of the most beautiful arrondissement of Paris; the Marais. It has for purpose to make art accessible to all. Additionally, it is committed to supporting and welcoming artists from a range of backgrounds. Just like art reflects society, the Gallery mirrors its surrounding environment.
The intention of this exhibition, is to showcase five unique artists that portrays the Gallery’s ethics. Through this exhibition, we wish for you to be transported to our Parisian artistic environment.”

Bunkerexhibition #44 – De Nazit Marion van Hoogen
The theme of the final bunker exhibition of 2021 season was ‘THE AFTER-SHOW’. Marion van Hoogen created a series of works in which the impact of war is depicted by using innocent scenes in the form of old family photographs, combined with a menacing atmosphere and disturbing elements. The photographs are from before, during and after WWII. The attack sometimes comes from an unexpected direction, as in the case of the accidental bombing of Bezuidenhout -a neighbourhood in The Hague-.

Paradijsvaarten/ Paradise Cruises: music & theatre on the water
The Parade has returned to the Westbroekpark, 2–18 July. Waterkant, Willemsvaart and the Hague Music Academy have therefore joined forces to put together a programme of side events.
Willemsvaart docks daily at the Waterkant jetty, where you can board for a ‘Paradijsvaart’: a boat trip featuring music and theatre on the water.
Come and grab a bite to eat, or get some takeaway, bring your own glass of wine onto the boat (we also sell half-bottles of wine) and enjoy yourself.
On Saturday 3 July, Waterkant will also be hosting Scroll Radio. Da_Proklamator will be playing in front of the bunker at 4.00 pm, followed by Human Nature DJ at 6.00 pm. These ‘Garden Sessions’ will be recorded and can be listened to later on Scroll Radio.
Two weeks later, on 17 July, is the final Saturday of the Parade. As is tradition, there’ll be a party with Tabass-co DJs at Waterkant. Unfortunately, we’ve had to cancel the Tabass-co party following the stricter measures announced at the latest press conference.

From around 6.00 pm, terrace-goers will already be able to see and hear part of the programme. The rest of the programme can be enjoyed whilst sailing on the Willemsvaart boat.
We’re proud of our beautiful Valerie Scheffer, who’ll be kicking things off with Nora van der Winden on Friday 2 July. These talented ladies will be performing pop songs.
Sunday 4 July, Friday 9 July, Saturday 17 July and Sunday 18 July are for Johnny Cash fans. Enjoy a boat trip whilst listening to Johnny’s best songs performed by the Cash Covers.
On Monday 5, Tuesday 6 and Monday 12 July, none other than Esmee van Nieuwenhuizen will be stepping aboard the boat. Together with Peter le Feber , she’ll be treating us to a colourful array of opera melodies.
Peter will also be there on Thursday 8, Tuesday 13 and Thursday 15 July, performing Yiddish tunes alongside Esther Ephraim.
Later in the week, there’ll be Gypsy & Klezkof Klezmer music, Merijn Ruis will be singing songs, and Onwijs Gijs will be performing their The Hague hits. Students and teachers of the music academy participate and on a number of days there is even theater on the boat: As part of Schaduwtheater de Halve Maan, Irma & Dorien will be presenting a special shadow theatre performance for young and old alike. An unforgettable theatre experience on the water!
The starting and finishing point is at Waterkant. The Paradijsvaart cruise lasts approximately 45 minutes.
