Bunkerexhibition #8 – I for Isolation Sara Nuytemans

Maureen Prins -the first to exhibit in our bunker, see 2002- from Tilburg recommended Sara for a bunker exhibition, Sara worked and lived in both The Hague and Yokyakarta at the time.

I for Isolation: A woman is trapped in one of the four rooms of the bunker. The bunker is otherwise empty. But she sits there elegantly dressed in 1940’s fashion.

There is a knock on a door. The audience must search the entire bunker for the sound.

We see the trapped woman on a monitor next to the door, we hear knocking.

She, the prisoner, is calm and resigned to her situation, but for her amusement, seeking contact with the visitors by knocking on the door. A knocking mechanism is installed for this purpose. This mechanism consists of an electromagnet that pulls a lever. The magnet is controlled by a computer.

Sara and me had a discussion about the frequency of the knocking on the door. I felt the attention span of the average visitor was too short to hear the knocking at all, while visiting the bunker. I suggested to have the knock every 30 seconds but we kept it at every 2 minutes. Because the artist is the boss.
