Bunkerexhibition #34 Luuk Schröder
Luuk Schröder creates work that makes us reflect on the space we see. His focus isn’t on capturing/recording, but on intervening in the environment. His images intrigue, amuse, and make you wonder what’s happening outside that frame. Schröder created new work specifically for the Bunker. Being both backdrop and the location for this work. In addition, he also displayed earlier work: Viewers and a part from his Measurement series. April 28 – June 17

Emily Huurdeman researches the relationship of human vs nature as a performance artist. She mainly uses video and installations. A simple action is central to her work. For example in the work Shaving the Ram. The ram we see her shearing is one of the oldest sheep breeds in Western Europe. Shaving this breed ram is a classic theme in painting: the master of the house shaves the dominant ram of a flock of sheep. Emily, shaving the ram in her underwear, shows a new relationship. And thus a new relationship with nature; both ram and man are in a vulnerable position here. July 19 – August 17, 2018

During a three-week study and build-up period, Hilke Walraven and Brigitte Louter created ‘site-specific’ work. In their exhibition, they reversed the nature of things. Usually, the artificial slowly decays, while nature keeps growing. In their works, the concrete bunker space came to life. Hilke described working in the bunker as follows: ‘When you go outside, it’s as if you’re stepping out of a dream. All kinds of landscapes arose in my head. Landscapes where concrete mountains grow out of the floor, and where you’re watched by the periscope.’ This manifested itself in growing steel pipes, concrete blocks with fountains, and an extra floor in the bunker beneath which a patch of grass suddenly appeared. Brigitte complemented this uncanny universe with talking spheres and a collection of ‘sand meters’. Exhibition: September 9 – 30/ Open Studio: August 17 – September 9

In this program we have tried to bring three different approaches to film-making together. A large-scale documentary work by Joyce Overheul about her trip to North Korea. A series of interventions in her environment by Nuni Weisz and Treelogy, a collection of accidental encounters by Anita Horváth. June 24 – July 8

Visit of Chinese Prime Minister:
In October 2018 Ishara Clermonts and me were cleaning and winterizing the premises in our overalls, when a young Chinese girl came running up to us, asking whether we could put up a table. A delegation from the People’s Republic of China came to the Westbroekpark after they had payed the Dutch prime minister a visit, because apparently there is a very special tree in the park which the prime minister Li Keqiang wanted to see. Within 5 minutes the place was full of Chinese officials, we served them left over ice cream and soft drinks from a box and thought it might be nice to show them the bunker too. We gave them a Bunkerdag banner. When I told the organizer of the yearly held Bunkerday, I thought she would be pleased, their banner going all the way to China or at least to the embassy, but she wasn’t. ‘We only distribute this once and do you know how much it costs?’, she said. Since then they didn’t include ‘our’ bunker in their program-. But the girl we set the table for, came back, when the other officials were out of sight, and said: ‘You saved my career’.
